F - Glossary of Woodworking Terms

 Feather Edge: The end of a section of wood cut to a wedge, or tapered point.

 Ferrous Metal: Ferrous metals contain iron (whereas non-ferrous metals do not). Ferrous metals are strong and durable, and therefore often used in building construction and large scale piping. Examples of ferrous metals include steel and cast iron.

 Fibreboard: An engineered wood product made from wood fibres, sawdust, wood flakes etc compacted into rigid sheets. Available as low-density, medium-density (MDF) or high-density. Suitable for joinery, panelling, boxing in, furniture, shelving and so forth.

 Finger Joint: A joint made up of a series of equally spaced projections, on the edges of both pieces of material, that interconnect. Find finger joint cutters here.

 Forstner Bit: A cylinder boring bit which creates a clean cut hole with a flat bottom. Guided by its circular rim rather than its centre point. Find forstner bits here.
