A practical and popular method of joining constructional timber is to use screwed connections with threaded bars, washers and nuts. A carpenter will typically use an auger drill bit to drill a through-hole into the wooden beam matching the threaded bar and follow this with counterboring the timber to accommodate the washer and the nut. This is a two-step operation. FAMAG’s shell drill counterbores make life a lot easier: simply slide the counterbore on the shaft of the auger drill bit, tighten the grub screw, then drill and counterbore in one easy operation.
